Description

Euthanasia, Ethics and Public Policy: An Argument against Legalisation (2nd Edition) – eBook PDF

Euthanasia, Ethics and Public Policy, 2nd Edition, (PDF) argues against the legalization of voluntary euthanasia and/or physician-assisted suicide on the view that, even if they were ethically defensible in particular ‘hard cases’, neither could be successfully controlled by law. It maintains that the experience of legalization in the Belgium, Netherlands, and Oregon lends backing to the two ‘slippery slope’ opinions against legalization, the ‘logical’ and the ’empirical’.

The empirical argument challenges the practicality of drafting and enforcing adequate safeguards against abuse and mistake; the logical argument shows that approval of the case for euthanasia in the case of suffering patients who request it logically includes acceptance of euthanasia for suffering patients who are unable to request it, like infants and those with advanced dementia.

Though it barely seems possible, this updating of the classic ebook on the quintessential issue in modern medicine has made its assessment of the ethical and legal issues in euthanasia even more trenchant and illuminating.’ — Alexander M.
